How to choose a free dynamic QR code generator that lasts
11 min read
The best free dynamic QR code generator is one whose codes keep working for years without a reprint, a surprise bill or a trial that runs out: a real free plan, no scan cap, print-ready files and a clear price after the first year. Here are 8 questions to ask any generator before you print, and how to check each answer in a few minutes.
In short
- First decide whether you need a dynamic code, one whose link you can change after printing.
- Look for a real free plan, not a trial after which the code stops working.
- Check code and scan limits, print files, stats, and what the service records about people who scan.
- Compare the price after a year and what happens to your codes when you stop paying.
- Every answer is on the pricing page, in the terms or in a quick test on your phone.

linqr is our product: a free dynamic QR code generator. For each question we say how linqr answers it, but the checklist works for any service.
Static or dynamic
A static code stores your link directly in its pattern. It works as long as the page exists and doesn't depend on any service, but you can't change the link or count scans. A dynamic code goes through the generator's short link: you can change the destination after printing and see stats, but you depend on the generator keeping that short link alive.
For a one-off concert poster with a link that won't change, static is fine. For menus, business cards, packaging and anything you print by the hundred, dynamic is the safer choice. We compare the two in static vs dynamic QR codes. Every linqr code is dynamic.
Trial or a real free plan
This is the most common bad surprise: a free dynamic code works during a trial, say a week or two, then opens a payment page or stops working. By then the flyers are printed.
How to check: search the pricing page and the terms for “trial” and for what happens to codes when it ends. A request for a credit card on a free plan is another warning sign. We go deeper in do QR codes expire. linqr has no trial: the Free plan needs no card, and codes have no expiry date.
Scan and code limits
There are usually two limits: the number of active codes and the number of scans per month. A scan cap is the more dangerous one because it hits the code that works best: a successful mailer can burn through it in a week. Also check whether the code keeps redirecting once you go over.
On linqr's Free plan you get 3 active dynamic codes, with unlimited scans and link changes. Pro has no code limit.
Print formats and sizes
PNG is fine for screens and small prints. Print shops and designers prefer a vector file (SVG, PDF or EPS) that scales without getting blurry. For raster files, check the resolution: as a rule of thumb, 2048 px at 300 dpi prints about 6.8 inches (17 cm) wide.
How to check: drop a test file into your layout before you design anything. linqr's Free plan gives you PNG, JPG, WEBP and SVG up to 2048 px, and Pro adds a 4096 px size plus PDF and EPS files, which you size in centimeters with Print size.
Stats, privacy and safety
Ask two things: what you'll see, and what the service records about the people who scan. Good stats leave out bots and link previews, or your numbers run high. Read the privacy policy too: is the IP address stored with each scan, and are there advertising cookies on the way?
Safety matters to the people scanning too, so look for a clear way to report abuse. Our guide to whether QR codes are safe covers what people check before they tap.
On Free, linqr shows scans, unique scans, a 7- or 30-day chart, top 3 countries and devices; Pro adds cities, systems, browsers, languages, hours, a year of history and CSV export. We don't store IP addresses or full browser identifiers, bots and link previews aren't counted, and abuse reports go to hello@onsonara.com.
Design and scan checks
A logo, brand colors and a frame label help, but a good-looking code that won't scan is worthless. The usual culprits are low contrast, an oversized logo and too little margin. Check whether the generator warns you about these before you download, and test on two different phones.
In linqr, a real decoder reads the preview and shows Scans correctly or a warning with a one-click fix, such as Fix contrast or Make logo smaller.
Ads and interstitial pages
Nothing should stand between the scan and your page. An ad or an interstitial page adds a step, loses customers and makes your code look like someone else's promotion. Examples from the vendors' own pages (as of September 25, 2026): on ME-QR's free plan, people who scan see an ad before your content (linqr vs ME-QR), QR TIGER's free codes show ads and are capped at 500 scans each (linqr vs QR TIGER), and on Bitly's free plan you can't change where a code points (linqr vs Bitly).
Make a test code
Link it to your own site and download it on the free plan.
Scan it on cellular data
Turn off Wi-Fi so you see what a customer on the sidewalk sees.
Watch what loads
If a banner, a countdown or the generator's own page shows up first, keep looking.
A linqr code redirects straight to your link, with no ads and no interstitial page.
The price after a year, and what happens when you cancel
Compare the full-year price, not a first-month promo, and check whether the renewal price is the same. The key question is what happens to your printed codes when you stop paying. They might stop, open the generator's page, or keep working. The answer should be in the terms, in writing.
linqr Pro is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with no intro pricing. The terms of service, linked in the footer, set out what happens to codes when Pro ends. The Free plan itself has no trial and no card requirement. See linqr pricing and how our free QR code generator with no expiration works.
The best free dynamic QR code generator checklist
Run through this table for each service you're considering: the best free dynamic QR code generator for you is the one that answers all eight clearly and in writing. For specific services side by side, with trials, scan limits and prices after year one, see our QR code generator comparison.
| Question | Why it matters | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Static or dynamic? | Only a dynamic code lets you change the link after printing | Scan it: a short link from the service means dynamic |
| Real free plan or trial? | After a trial the code may stop working | Pricing and terms: “trial”, a card required at sign-up |
| What are the limits? | A scan cap hits your best code | Pricing: codes, scans, and what happens over the limit |
| Which print files? | Print shops want a vector file or a large PNG | Download a test file before you design |
| What do the stats show? | Bots inflate the numbers | Stats description and privacy policy |
| Does it check scanning? | A pretty code still has to scan | Preview with warnings, test on two phones |
| Any ads on the way? | An interstitial page loses customers | Scan a test code on cellular data |
| What after a year, or if you cancel? | Codes stay in print for years | Terms: what happens to codes when the plan ends |

Which QR code generator is free forever?
Look for a free plan with no end date rather than a trial, and read what the terms say about codes on that plan. Static codes from any generator keep working as long as the page they point to exists. For dynamic codes, the free plan must not be a trial in disguise. linqr's Free plan has no trial and includes 3 active dynamic codes.
Are there free dynamic QR codes that don't expire?
Yes, but read the terms, because some “free” dynamic codes are really trials. You want a free plan with no trial, no card and codes that have no expiry date. On linqr, Free codes have no expiry date: a code stops redirecting when you pause or delete it, delete your account, or it's blocked for breaking the terms.
Do free dynamic codes have scan limits?
Some do, usually per month, and a cap tends to hit your best-performing code first. Check the pricing page for a scan limit and for what happens when you reach it. On linqr's Free plan, scans and link changes are unlimited; the limit is 3 active codes, and Pro removes it.
What is the catch with free QR code generators?
Usually one of three things: a trial that ends and takes your printed codes with it, a scan cap, or ads and interstitial pages between the scan and your site. Static codes have no catch like that, but you can't change their link. With linqr, the catch is the limit of 3 active codes on Free; more codes and full stats are part of Pro.
Can a generator switch off my printed code?
A static code, no: it holds your link and works as long as your page does. A dynamic code runs through the generator's short link, so the service can switch it off, for example after a trial, for non-payment or for breaking its terms. On linqr, codes have no expiry date and no trial, and the terms of service, linked in the footer, set out the rules for keeping codes active.
Should a free QR code generator ask for my credit card?
Treat it as a warning sign. A card at sign-up usually means a trial that turns into a paid plan, and printed codes may stop working if you don't pay. A genuinely free plan has no reason to charge you later. linqr asks only for a Google sign-in or an email and password, and the Free plan needs no card.
Do free QR code generators show ads when someone scans the code?
Some do. The scan may open the generator's own page, a banner or a countdown before your site, which costs you visitors and makes the code look like someone else's. Test it: make a code, scan it on cellular data and watch what loads first. A linqr code redirects straight to your link, with no ads and no page in between.
Is a 2048 px PNG QR code big enough for printing?
For most everyday print, yes. At 300 dpi, 2048 px prints about 6.8 inches (17 cm) wide, more than enough for menus, flyers and business cards. For large posters, banners or a print shop that asks for vector files, use SVG, which is on linqr's Free plan, or PDF and EPS, which come with Pro together with a 4096 px size.
Can I move dynamic QR codes I already printed from another generator to linqr?
Not the printed codes themselves. A dynamic code encodes the other service's short link, so only that service can change where it goes. While it still works, you can keep it and use linqr for new prints. If the old service is closing or charging for it, make new linqr codes and replace the printed ones at the next print run.
What privacy questions should I ask before choosing a QR code generator?
Ask what is recorded when someone scans: is the IP address stored, are there advertising cookies or trackers on the way, and who can see the data? Look for the answers in the privacy policy. linqr doesn't store IP addresses or full browser identifiers, and keeps only approximate location, device type, system, browser and language for your stats.
How many dynamic QR codes does a small business need?
Usually one per placement, so you can see what works: for example the counter, the tables and a flyer. A café might need a menu code, a review code and a code for its Instagram profile. linqr's Free plan includes 3 active dynamic codes with unlimited scans; if you need more, Pro removes the limit.
