A QR code for PDF files points to a link where the file lives, on Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or your own website, because the file itself can't fit inside the code. You can change that link any time, so when you publish a new price list or an updated manual, every printed code opens the new version.

Why the PDF isn't inside the code
Even the largest QR code, 177 modules per side, holds just under 3 KB of data, while a typical PDF is hundreds of kilobytes. A code that dense would be impossible to scan from a flyer anyway. So every QR code for a PDF holds only an address, and the phone opens the file in its browser.
With linqr, that address is a short link, onsonara.com/q/…, that redirects to your file. That keeps the code at just 25 modules per side at medium error correction, so it scans easily even from a small label.

Where to keep the file
The file has to open for anyone with the link, without signing in. Here's how that works in the usual places:

Make a QR code for PDF files in 4 steps
Upload the file and share it
Put the PDF on Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or your website and set access to anyone with the link.
Test the link in a private window
Copy the link and open it in a private browser window. If you see the PDF without signing in, so will everyone else.
Paste the link into the creator
Paste it into The link to turn into a QR code at the top of this page. In the Frame tab, add a label like “USER MANUAL” or “PRICE LIST” so people know what they'll get.
Save and download the code
Click Download QR code and save the code to your account (Google or email and password). A PNG downloads automatically, and the download sheet also offers SVG for your printer.
New version, same printed code
PDFs go stale: prices change, catalogs get new models, the event program moves a session. There are two ways to keep a printed code on the current version:
- Change the link in linqr. Upload the new file, open My codes and click Change link. It works instantly, even if you move the file from Drive to your own site, and the old address stays in the link history.
- Replace the file where it is. Google Drive lets you upload a new version of the same file: More → Manage versions → Upload new version. Afterward, scan the code and check that the new content opens.
It's the same idea as a QR code for a restaurant menu: the PDF menu changes with the season, and the table tents stay put.
Mobile tips
Almost everyone who scans your code opens the PDF on a phone, often on cellular data. A few habits make that easier:
- Keep the file light. Compress images before exporting; a 30 MB brochure is a long wait in a parking lot.
- Make page one count. The first page should say what the document is, with the key facts, like model number, prices or dates.
- Say what's behind the code. A frame label or a line of print next to the code (“Full manual,” “Fall catalog”) tells people why they should scan.
Check sharing before you print
When a PDF code fails, it's usually the link, not the code: a private file opens for you because you're signed in, and for nobody else. Before you send the artwork to the printer:
- scan the code with a phone that isn't signed in to your account;
- make sure the file won't be deleted or moved when someone tidies up the shared drive;
- check that the destination shown in My codes is the file you meant.

Can I upload a PDF to linqr?
No. linqr doesn't host or store files. You keep the PDF on Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or your own website, and the code redirects to its link. That's also why you can swap the file later: upload the new version anywhere, change the link in My codes, and every printed code opens the new file.
How do I make a QR code for a PDF on Google Drive?
Upload the PDF to Drive, click Share, set “General access” to Anyone with the link with the Viewer role, and click Copy link. Open the link in a private window to check it, then paste it into the creator on this page and click Download QR code. The code is saved to your account, so you can change the link later.
Can I replace the PDF after printing?
Yes. Upload the new version, open My codes, click Change link and paste the new address. The change works right away, and you don't need to download or reprint the code. On Google Drive you can also replace the file itself with Manage versions. Either way, scan the code afterward to see what your customers will see.
Is the file stored inside the QR code?
No. Even the largest QR code holds just under 3 KB of data, and a typical PDF is hundreds of kilobytes, so a QR code for a PDF always holds a link to a file online. With linqr, it's a short redirect link: the code stays small and easy to scan, and you can point it at a new file later.
Why won't my PDF open when scanned?
Usually the sharing is off: the file is restricted to you, so it opens on your phone, where you're signed in, and nowhere else. Set access to anyone with the link. Other causes are a deleted or moved file and a very heavy PDF on a slow connection. Open the link in a private window to see exactly what a stranger sees.
Is a PDF QR code free?
Yes. The Free plan includes 3 active dynamic codes, unlimited scans and link changes, full design with logo and frame, and PNG, JPG, WEBP and SVG downloads up to 2048 px. Can I make a PDF QR code from Dropbox or OneDrive?
Yes. Create a share link in Dropbox or OneDrive set so that anyone with the link can view, copy it and paste it into the linqr creator. Open the link in a private window before printing: if it asks for a login, people scanning the code will see the same login screen instead of your PDF.
How big can the PDF behind a QR code be?
linqr sets no limit, because it doesn't host the file; the storage service does. For mobile readers, smaller is better: a PDF of a few MB opens quickly on cellular data, while a 50 MB scan may time out. Compress images and export at screen quality before sharing the link.
Can I restrict who opens the PDF behind the code?
Yes, through your storage service, not through linqr. If you share the file only with specific people, others who scan the code will be asked to sign in or request access. linqr doesn't add passwords. For public print, share with anyone who has the link; for internal documents, use restricted sharing.
Can I see how many people opened the PDF from the QR code?
linqr shows how many times the code was scanned: total and unique scans, a 30-day chart, countries and devices on the Free plan. It can't see whether the PDF finished loading or was read. Google Drive and Dropbox may show their own view counts for the file.
What should I do when the PDF is outdated and there's no new version yet?
Pause the code. In My codes, choose Pause, and anyone who scans sees a page saying the code is temporarily switched off, instead of old prices or rules. When the new file is ready, use Change link if its address changed, then Resume.
